Ice Maker Not Making Ice? Causes and Fixes for Any Brand

The steps below work for every brand of refrigerator ice maker, with Samsung, LG, GE, Whirlpool and Frigidaire differences called out. For a new fridge, read new installation first: no ice for the first day is normal.
Ice maker not making ice: match what you see
| What you notice | Most likely cause | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No ice, water dispenser works | Ice maker off, freezer too warm, bucket not seated | On/off, temperature |
| No ice and slow or no water at the dispenser | Clogged filter, valve not fully open, kinked line, low pressure | Water and filter |
| Small, hollow or few cubes | Not enough water reaching the ice maker | Water pressure |
| Buzzing or clicking, no water in the tray | Ice maker on with no water supply, or frozen fill tube | Frozen fill tube |
| Ice stuck in the tray or clumped in the bucket | Jam or bucket out of place | Bucket and jams |
| New fridge, no ice yet | Normal for up to 24 hours; air in the line | New install |
How water becomes ice
Water travels from your house supply, through a small line to the fridge’s inlet valve, through the water filter, and up a fill tube into the ice maker tray in the freezer. Any weak link along the way means no ice.
- Supply valve behind or under the fridge: fully open.
- Water line: not kinked when the fridge was pushed back.
- Water filter: replace if it’s more than six months old.
- Inlet valve: a technician job.
- Fill tube: can freeze shut.
- On/off switch or wire arm: set to ON (arm down).
- Ice bucket: pushed fully in.
1. Make sure the ice maker is on
Whirlpool: “A common reason an ice maker does not make ice is that it was accidentally turned off.” How it’s turned on depends on the model:
- Wire arm (older and many GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire models): arm down means on, arm up means off. Whirlpool: “Check the control arm to ensure that it’s in the ‘on’ position.” GE: “Be sure nothing interferes with the sweep of the feeler arm.”
- Switch on the ice maker: LG: “Power to the Icemaker is controlled by an ON/OFF switch located on the left side of the Icemaker.”
- Control panel: Samsung: “Most models have an Ice Off icon, which will light up when the ice maker is off.” Frigidaire: “the LED light on your display for the ice maker will be illuminated” when it’s on.
2. Check the freezer temperature
Samsung: “The freezer needs to be at 0°F or less in order to produce ice.” Whirlpool also says to set the freezer to 0°F. LG says ice production needs the freezer below 19°F and recommends 0°F for normal production. If the freezer itself is warm, fix that first; see refrigerator not cooling and freezer not freezing.
3. Seat the bucket and clear jams
A bucket that isn’t pushed fully in stops the ice maker, and on many models the gap lets warm air in. Frigidaire says to push the bin “fully to the back of the shelf” so the signal arm can drop. Break up clumped ice and throw it out. If cubes are stuck in the tray, KitchenAid says to use “only a plastic utensil, so the ice maker is not damaged.” Ice that isn’t used for weeks clumps; Frigidaire suggests using ice “at least twice a week.”
4. Check the water supply and filter
- Valve: the shutoff valve feeding the fridge must be fully open.
- Line: pull the fridge out and check the line for kinks. Whirlpool: “A kink can reduce water flow.”
- Filter: Whirlpool says to “change your refrigerator’s water filter once every six months.” A clogged or badly seated filter cuts flow; reseat or replace it. Samsung’s next step if its test fails is to “remove the water filter and try again.”
- Saddle valves: GE warns that “self-tapping valves don’t provide a large enough opening for water to pass through.”
5. Check the water pressure
Most brands need at least 20 psi. GE and LG list “between 20 and 120 psi”; LG asks for 40 to 120 psi on models with a filter. Whirlpool’s current guidance is 30 to 120 psi, with performance “typically optimal between 40–80 psi,” and 40 to 60 psi to the inlet valve with reverse osmosis. Samsung’s quick test: the line “should have enough pressure to fill 6 ounces (or 3/4 cup) in less than 10 seconds.” Time the water dispenser into a measuring cup. Whirlpool adds: “If the pressure is sufficient at 20 psi or higher, it means you may need to replace the water inlet valve.”
⚠️ Caution: no heat guns, no prying
Don’t chip at the ice maker with a knife or screwdriver, and don’t use a heat gun. Samsung says not to defrost its ice makers yourself because “this may damage the ice maker.” Unplug the fridge and close the water valve before you touch the water line or any panel, and leave the inlet valve and ice maker wiring to a technician.
6. Reset and test the ice maker
- Samsung: remove the bucket and “Press and hold Test (A) until you hear a chime.” One chime means it passed; several chimes mean request service.
- LG: remove the bin, “Grasp the ice maker and shake it a couple of times up and down,” replace the bin and power the fridge off for 30 seconds. Or “Press and hold the test button for about three seconds, the ice maker will begin to turn.” LG: “After 4 – 6 hours, if the unit is still not producing ice, or harvesting ice, the unit will require repair service.”
- Whirlpool: if there’s a reset button, “press and hold it for a few seconds.” If not, unplug the fridge for 1 minute, then “wait a couple of hours and check for ice production.”
7. Frozen fill tube
If the ice maker buzzes or clicks but no water reaches the tray, the fill tube may be frozen. KitchenAid notes that when the ice maker is on but has no water, it “will continue to try to make ice, causing a buzzing sound.” Whirlpool says thawing a frozen water inlet tube is “best to leave it up to a professional.” Samsung says not to defrost its ice makers yourself and to request service if the ice maker is frozen over.
New refrigerator? Give it a day
GE: “A newly-installed refrigerator may take 12 to 24 hours to begin making ice.” Frigidaire: “Air in the new plumbing lines can result in 2 or 3 empty ice cycles.” GE also says to “Throw away the first few batches of ice to allow the water line to clear.” LG says full ice production can take 72 hours. If the water line isn’t connected yet, turn the ice maker off; Frigidaire says this stops the fill valve from chattering.

| Ice maker repair, average | About $400 | Angi (Aug 2026) |
| Water inlet valve replacement | $85 to $175 | Fixr (Aug 2025) |
| Ice maker water line repair | $100 to $200 | Fixr (Aug 2025) |
| Call-out fee | $50 to $100 | Fixr (Aug 2025) |
When to call a technician
Call if the ice maker is on, the freezer is at 0°F, the filter is new and the dispenser fills 6 ounces in under 10 seconds, yet the tray still doesn’t fill; if the test fails; or if the fill tube is frozen. If the dispenser is also weak with good house pressure, the inlet valve is the usual suspect. Print the checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my ice maker not making ice but the water works?
The water dispenser and ice maker share a supply, so the water is fine. Check the ice maker is on, the freezer is at 0°F, the bucket is seated, and the fill tube isn’t frozen.
How do I reset my ice maker?
Samsung and LG have a test button; Whirlpool models may have a reset button. If there’s none, unplug the fridge for 30 seconds to 1 minute, then wait a few hours.
How long does a new ice maker take to make ice?
Usually 12 to 24 hours after installation, with full production in up to 72 hours (LG). The first 2 or 3 cycles can be empty.
What water pressure does an ice maker need?
At least 20 psi for most brands; Whirlpool now says 30 to 120 psi, best at 40 to 80. Fill 6 ounces in under 10 seconds as a quick check.
Why are my ice cubes small or hollow?
Not enough water is reaching the tray: an old filter, a partly closed valve, a kinked line or low pressure.
