Freezer Not Freezing or Not Cold Enough? 6 Checks

Frosted freezer air vent and a gap in the door gasket
Quick answer: Freezer not freezing? Measure first: Whirlpool recommends 0°F (-18°C) or below. If it’s warmer, check that the freezer control hasn’t been turned up; that the door seals close fully; that food isn’t packed against the air vents (Whirlpool warns overpacking can cover the evaporator fan); and vacuum the condenser coils. Heavy frost on the back wall, or a fridge that’s cold while the freezer is warm, usually means a defrost or fan fault that needs service.

Updated September 29, 2026. Steps checked against Whirlpool’s refrigeration guidance and USDA food-safety advice; no hands-on test is claimed. Controls vary by model.

First, protect your food

Keep the door closed while you work out what’s wrong. The USDA says a full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours (about 24 hours if half full) with the door closed. Food that still has ice crystals, or is at 40°F or below, can be refrozen. Source: USDA: keep your food safe during emergencies.

1. Measure the actual temperature

Put an appliance thermometer between frozen packages in the middle of the freezer and read it after several hours, or the next morning. The dial setting isn’t a temperature reading.

What you findGo to
Everything soft, freezer barely coldSetting, coils, then service
Around 10–20°F: food frozen but not hard, ice cream softCold, but not cold enough
Frost or ice building on the back wall or ventsFrost
Fridge section fine, freezer warmVents, then frost / fan
Frost on food and packages, door doesn’t sealDoor seals
New fridge, or just plugged back inGive it time to reach temperature; don’t load it fully until it has

2. Check the freezer control

Controls get bumped by packages or changed by other people in the house. Set the freezer to the recommended middle or colder setting in your manual, and aim for 0°F. Change the setting one step at a time and give it 24 hours before judging. Whirlpool notes that on dial controls, if you can’t hear a click when you turn it from the lowest to the highest setting, the control may need professional replacement.

3. Check the door seals

Whirlpool: the door seals “keep cold air inside” and must close tightly. Check that:

  • The door closes by itself and isn’t held open by a drawer, bin or package.
  • The gasket isn’t torn, flattened or folded. Clean sticky residue with warm, soapy water.
  • The refrigerator is level, or tilted slightly back as your manual describes, so the doors swing closed.

4. Don’t block the vents and fan

Cold air enters the freezer (and often the fridge section too) through vents from the evaporator area. Whirlpool warns that overpacking “can result in a covered evaporator fan and airflow blockage.” Move food away from the vents at the back or top, and don’t pack the compartment solid.

5. Clean the condenser coils

Whirlpool: dust on the condenser coils weakens cooling. Unplug the refrigerator, then vacuum the coils with a crevice tool or coil brush. They’re behind the bottom front grille or at the back, depending on the model. Check that the air space around the fridge matches the clearances in the installation guide.

6. Frost buildup: a sign of a defrost or fan problem

Modern frost-free freezers defrost automatically. Whirlpool says that if ice builds up too quickly, you should get professional help. Signs:

  • A thick layer of frost or ice on the back panel or vent covers.
  • The freezer warms up gradually over days or weeks.
  • You can’t hear the fan inside the freezer while the compressor is running.

Never chip ice with sharp tools. Don’t use a hair dryer or heat gun to speed defrosting: manufacturers such as Samsung warn this can damage the refrigerator. A manual defrost (unplug, empty, door open, towels down) can get you going temporarily, but if the defrost system has failed the ice comes back. That needs a technician.

Cold, but not cold enough?

A freezer sitting at 10–20°F usually has one of these causes:

  • The control set too warm. See step 2.
  • A leaky door seal, or the door being opened a lot. See step 3.
  • Airflow blocked by food. See step 4.
  • Dirty condenser coils or a hot location, such as a garage in summer. See step 5.
  • Early frost buildup. See step 6.

If the temperature keeps slipping after all of that, arrange service before it gets worse.

When to call a technician

Call a technician if the freezer won’t reach about 0°F after the checks above, if frost keeps coming back, if the fan is silent, or if the compressor runs constantly or clicks on and off. Have the model and serial number (usually on a label inside the fresh-food section), your thermometer readings, and what you’ve tried. Print the checklist.

Frequently asked questions

What temperature should my freezer be?

Whirlpool recommends 0°F (-18°C) or below, which is also the USDA’s recommendation for frozen food.

Why is my fridge cold but my freezer isn’t?

Blocked vents, a failed freezer fan, or frost choking the evaporator. Clear the vents first; if frost is building up or the fan is silent, it needs service.

Can I use a hair dryer to defrost the freezer?

No. Manufacturers such as Samsung warn it can damage the refrigerator. Let it thaw with the door open and towels down.
