Refrigerator Leaking Water? Find the Source and Fix It

Before you start, wipe up the water and dry the area, then watch where new water appears. Spilled drinks and melting ice from the dispenser are often mistaken for a leak, as Samsung points out.
Refrigerator leaking water: where is it coming from?
| Where the water is | Most likely cause | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Inside the fridge, under the crisper drawers, or ice on the freezer floor | Clogged or frozen defrost drain | Clear the drain |
| Puddle under the front of the fridge | Fridge not tilted back, drain pan full or cracked | Leveling, drain pan |
| Water at the back or under the fridge, from behind | Loose or damaged water supply line or connection | Water line |
| Drips inside near the water filter | Filter cracked or not seated | Water filter |
| Dripping from the dispenser | Air in the line, ice in the chute, pressure too high | Dispenser |
| Water under the ice maker or in the ice bucket | Door left open, loose fill connection | Ice maker, doors |
⚠️ Caution: water and electricity
Unplug the refrigerator before you pull it out, reach behind it or work near the water line, and close the water shutoff valve. Mop up standing water first so you aren’t working in it. Don’t use boiling water, a hair dryer or a heat gun on frozen drains; LG warns that “Hot air from a hair dryer or boiling water may damage or deform the plastic parts.” Don’t chip ice with a knife or screwdriver.
1. Clear the defrost drain (water inside the fridge)
A frost-free fridge periodically melts the frost off its freezer coil, and the water runs down a drain tube to a pan underneath. If food bits or ice block the drain, the water overflows inside instead, usually under the crisper drawers or onto the freezer floor.
- Find the drain hole: on many models it’s at the back of the freezer floor or behind a panel; your manual shows where. GE says that on its side-by-side models, “If a drain hole is not visible, service is required.”
- Flush it (GE’s method): mix “1 tablespoon of baking soda and 2 cups of hot tap water” and use a “meat/turkey (bulb) baster” to push it into the drain hole. “When clear, you will hear water running down into the drain pan below.” Samsung’s UK support also says to “flush it out with warm water.”
- If it’s frozen solid: LG’s advice is to let it thaw naturally: “unplug your refrigerator and leave the doors open for at least 24 hours to allow the frost to melt completely.” Empty the food into coolers first and put towels down.
- Prevent it: GE suggests flushing the drain once or twice a year with hot (not boiling) baking-soda water. LG says to “Store your freezer food in sealed containers to prevent debris from entering the drain.”
If the drain refreezes within days, the defrost heater or its control may be failing. That’s a technician job.
2. Check the drain pan (puddle at the front)
The drain pan sits under the fridge, usually behind the bottom grille, where defrost water evaporates. Samsung says “The drip pan can become dirty and accumulate a build-up of debris”; remove it and wash it. A cracked pan leaks onto the floor and needs replacing. Some pans can only be reached from the back or by a technician; check your manual.
3. Tilt the fridge slightly back
A fridge that leans forward sends defrost water to the front of the pan and over the edge. Samsung says to “Check to ensure that your appliance is tipped slightly backwards, this can be done by adjusting the front legs.” GE’s manual says the front should be “raised just enough that the doors close easily.” Both front legs should touch the floor firmly.
4. Check the water supply line (water at the back)
Unplug the fridge, close the shutoff valve and pull the fridge out. Frigidaire: “Loose connections could cause water to leak to the floor.” Run a dry paper towel along the line and each connection to find the wet spot. Tighten loose fittings gently. Whirlpool says “existing tears or breaks in the line” need “a replacement water supply line.” Samsung notes that water pressure that is too high or too low can also cause leaks, and reducing high pressure is a plumber’s job. If the line inside the fridge cabinet is leaking, or the leak is at the inlet valve on the back, call a technician.
5. Check the water filter (drips inside near the filter)
After a filter change, a filter that isn’t fully locked in will drip. Remove it and reinstall it until it clicks. Frigidaire: “Cracks in the water filter can cause leaking in the cabinet along with slow or no water at the door.” Check the filter for cracks and replace it if needed. Samsung says if the leak continues with a new filter, request service, because the filter housing may be damaged.
6. Ice maker and dispenser leaks
- Dispenser dripping after use: Frigidaire: “Air in the water line could cause water to drip from the water dispenser.” Dispense a few glasses to purge it. Ice or frost in the chute can melt and run down; Frigidaire says to clear it.
- Ice chute seal: Samsung says to clean the ice chute and its seal; a gap lets warm air in, which melts ice and causes drips.
- Ice maker leaking: GE: “Be sure the water line fittings are secure.” Water under the ice maker can also come from a door left open: Frigidaire says it “can cause the evaporator to ice up” and leak.
- Frozen water line: Whirlpool says to leave the fridge unplugged “for about two hours to allow the ice to melt,” and to call a professional if the ice clog isn’t translucent.
7. Doors and seals
A door that doesn’t close properly lets warm, humid air in, which turns into frost and then water. Samsung: “If the door isn’t closing properly your appliance will heat up and water will begin to form.” Check nothing is holding the door open, clean the gaskets with warm soapy water, and do the dollar bill test from our refrigerator not cooling guide. A torn gasket needs replacing.
What refrigerator leak repairs usually cost
| Repair | Typical cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Water inlet valve replacement | $85 to $175 | Fixr (Aug 2025) |
| Ice maker water line repair | $100 to $200 | Fixr (Aug 2025) |
| Water dispenser repair | $170 to $500 | Fixr (Aug 2025) |
| Door seal replacement | $60 to $100 | Fixr (Aug 2025) |
| Diagnostic visit | $60 to $100 | HomeAdvisor (June 2026) |
Clearing a defrost drain, cleaning the pan and leveling cost nothing but time.
When to call a technician
Call if you can’t find or reach the defrost drain, if it keeps refreezing, if the drain pan is cracked and not reachable, if the leak is at the inlet valve or inside the cabinet, or if water keeps building up after these steps. Whirlpool recommends “a thorough inspection of the fridge by a professional” when water keeps building up inside or beneath it. For a fridge installed in the last 30 days, Frigidaire says to contact the installer first. Print the checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my refrigerator leaking water inside, under the crisper drawers?
A clogged or frozen defrost drain. Flush it with warm water and a turkey baster, or let it thaw with the fridge unplugged and doors open.
Why is my fridge leaking water on the floor?
Usually the fridge is tilted forward, the drain pan is overflowing or cracked, or a water line connection at the back is loose.
How do I unclog a refrigerator defrost drain?
GE’s method: 1 tablespoon of baking soda in 2 cups of hot tap water, pushed into the drain hole with a turkey baster until you hear it run into the pan.
Can a water filter cause a fridge to leak?
Yes. A filter that isn’t locked in, or a cracked one, drips inside the fridge. Reseat it or replace it.
Is a leaking refrigerator dangerous?
It can damage floors and cabinets and puts water near electrical parts. Unplug it before you investigate, and dry the floor.
