- If you hear no fan noise, remove the rear freezer panel and inspect the fan blade for ice obstruction; clear any ice and retest.
- Spin the fan blade by hand—it should turn freely with no grinding.
- Use a multimeter set to continuity/resistance to test the fan motor windings. A reading of OL (open circuit) means the motor is burned out.

3. Defrost heater or defrost thermostat failed
The automatic defrost system runs a heating element several times per day to melt frost off the coils. A failed heater or thermostat lets ice build up until airflow is completely blocked.
- Unplug the refrigerator and remove the rear freezer panel to access the evaporator coils.
- Locate the defrost heater—it looks like a glass or metal tube wound around or under the coil assembly.
- Disconnect the heater leads and test with a multimeter for continuity. No continuity means the heater is open and must be replaced.

- Locate the damper: in most refrigerators it is behind a cover at the top-rear of the fresh-food section, or on the divider wall between compartments.
