Whirlpool Ice Maker Not Working? 7 Fixes & Reset

1. Make sure the ice maker is switched on
Whirlpool: “A common reason an ice maker does not make ice is that it was accidentally turned off.” Depending on the model:
- Wire shut-off arm: the arm must be down to make ice. Up means off.
- On/off switch: on the side or front of the ice maker in the freezer; set it to On.
- Control panel: some models turn the ice maker on or off from the dispenser or interior panel. Check the ice maker indicator.
After switching it on, give it time. The freezer has to be cold enough and the first batch takes a while. Expect ice the next day rather than within the hour.
2. Check the water supply
Whirlpool: “Ensure the water line is securely connected and the valve is fully opened.” Also check the line behind the fridge isn’t kinked or crushed, which often happens when the fridge is pushed back. If the water dispenser (if you have one) is also slow or dead, the problem is on the supply side, not the ice maker.
3. Check the water filter
Whirlpool: “A clogged or improperly installed water filter can reduce water flow to the ice maker.” Replace it every 6 months, as Whirlpool recommends. If the problem started right after a filter change, remove and re-seat the filter until it locks fully. A filter that isn’t sealed can stop water flowing. After fitting a new filter, run water through the dispenser as your manual directs to flush air out.
4. Check the freezer temperature
Whirlpool: set the freezer “between 0 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit (-17 to -15 degrees Celsius).” Check it with an appliance thermometer. If it’s warmer and your food is soft too, the ice maker isn’t the real problem. See freezer not freezing.
5. Clear an ice jam in the bin
Ice that melts and refreezes forms clumps that jam the bin or dispenser chute. With the ice maker switched off, remove the bin, break up or empty the clumped ice, dry the bin, refit it firmly, and switch the ice maker back on. Don’t chip at ice inside the freezer with sharp or metal tools.
6. Power reset
Whirlpool’s reset: unplug the refrigerator for 1 minute, then plug it back in. Afterwards, check that the ice maker is still switched on. Some models don’t go back to on after a power interruption. Some Whirlpool ice makers also have a test or reset button; your manual explains whether yours does and how to use it.
7. Frozen fill tube: what not to do
If water reaches the ice maker area but freezes before filling the tray, the fill tube may be iced up. Don’t use a hair dryer or heat gun near the plastic parts, and don’t chip at the ice. Refrigerator makers such as Samsung warn against using a hair dryer to defrost because it can damage the refrigerator. Switch the ice maker off, let the area thaw naturally, or unplug and defrost as your manual directs. If it keeps freezing, have the water valve and supply checked; a valve that drips can refreeze the tube.
When to call Whirlpool service
Call Whirlpool service or a technician if the ice maker is on, the water supply and filter are good, the freezer is at 0–5°F, and there’s still no ice after a day. The water inlet valve and ice maker module are replaced as parts and tested with power on, so it’s not an owner job. Have the model and serial number (on the label inside the fresh-food section) and note what you’ve checked. Book through Whirlpool service (US).
