Kenmore Refrigerator Not Cooling? Safe First Checks

Start here: Protect perishable food, then record the actual refrigerator and freezer temperatures. A working light does not prove cooling is operating. Kenmore model families differ, so use the complete model number for every maintenance or service instruction.

Updated September 13, 2026. Owner observations and model lookup.

Check food safety before troubleshooting

Use an appliance thermometer. USDA recommends keeping the refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below. Perishable food held above 40°F for more than two hours should not be consumed. Move food to safe cold storage when needed; do not taste it to decide. Follow USDA refrigeration guidance and its separate power-outage advice if the electricity failed.

Record both compartments

Find your manual before cleaning or resetting

Use Kenmore’s manual lookup with the full model number. Check normal temperature controls, door closure, visible packaging or food obstructing vents, and any cooling-off setting described for that model. Avoid changing several controls at once; record the original settings.

Only clean condenser areas when the manual identifies them as owner-accessible and gives the procedure. Disconnect power as instructed. Do not remove an internal cover, force ice away with a sharp tool or use heat to speed an improvised defrost.

When to arrange qualified diagnosis

Persistent warming, repeat protective-device trips, a damaged cord or abnormal burning smell needs service. Keep away from wet electrical connections. Compressor, start-device, refrigerant, fan-circuit and control diagnosis should be performed using the model’s service procedure. Do not cut or recharge refrigerant tubing.

  • Full model and measured temperatures, with time recorded.
  • Whether one or both compartments are affected.
  • Display or error code and visible frost location.
  • Recent move, outage, door left open or setting change.
  • Steps already taken and where food was moved.

Print the observation sheet. Ask support to verify the cause and warranty before purchasing a relay, fan or board.

Does a lit interior mean the compressor is working?

No. Record the cooling result and operating pattern; a light is not a complete power or refrigeration-system test.

If only the fresh-food section is warm, read fridge warm but freezer working. See all refrigerator guides for other brands.
