Bosch Dishwasher E24 Error: What It Means and How to Fix It
Bosch uses three drain codes that are easy to mix up. E22 points to the filter, E24 to the drain path (mostly the hose), and E25 to the drain pump or its cover. The checks overlap, so the order below covers all three.

E22 vs E24 vs E25
- E22: Bosch: “An E22 error code indicates that the dishwasher filter is blocked.”
- E24: the dishwasher isn’t draining. Bosch’s international support puts it simply: “The drainage hose is blocked or kinked.” Bosch US adds the filter and the disposal plug as causes.
- E25: Bosch: “An E25 error code indicates the drain pump is blocked or the drain pump cover is loose or missing.”
⚠️ Caution: hot water, glass and power
Bosch warns the water “may be very hot (risk of scalding)” and that “The pump may be blocked with glass fragments.” Turn the dishwasher off and switch off its breaker (or unplug it) before you reach into the sump or remove the pump cover. Wear gloves and bail the water out with a cup first. Don’t pour drain cleaner into the dishwasher.
1. Clean the filters
Take out the lower rack and scoop out the standing water with a cup and a sponge. Then, as Bosch describes:
- “Unlock the filter unit found at the base of the dishwasher and pull it out.”
- “Separate the unit by carefully unscrewing the cylindrical filter first.”
- “Clean both filters under running tap water.” A small soft brush helps; “Do not use anything abrasive as this can damage the filter.”
- Refit the filter and “check that the arrow marks align,” which means it’s locked in place.
2. Check the drain hose
Open the sink cabinet and follow the drain hose from the dishwasher to the sink drain or disposal. Move anything pressing on it and straighten kinks. Bosch’s steps for a blocked hose: turn the dishwasher off, “Loosen the hose clip on the siphon,” “Carefully remove the drainage hose (residual water),” then “Clean the drainage hose and siphon spigot” before reconnecting and checking for leaks. Bosch US also says to “Check the siphon connection and ensure it’s sealed.”
3. Check the pump cover
Bosch: “The pump cover may be loose. Please locate it under the filter and ensure that it’s not loose.” With the filters out, you’ll see a small cover in the sump. Bosch’s E25 steps: “pry off the pump cover with a spoon until it clicks,” “Grip the cover and pull upward until you feel resistance,” “Then pull forward to remove the cover completely.” Remove debris and water with a sponge and “Check whether pump impeller can be rotated freely.” Snap the cover back in firmly, then refit the filters.
4. New garbage disposal? Check the knockout plug
Bosch lists “Brand new garbage disposal. The installer may have forgotten to remove the ‘knockout’ plug.” If the dishwasher hose connects to the disposal, “ensure that the plug is removed from the disposer’s dishwasher drain connection.” While you’re there, run the disposal with cold water to clear it.
5. Reset and drain
Bosch’s reset: “Press Reset 4 Sec. or Start Button for approximately 4 seconds.” “The residual water in the dishwasher will be pumped out and drained.” “This will take about a minute.” Then open the door and turn the dishwasher off. If it drains and E24 doesn’t come back, run a normal cycle.
How much water is normal in a Bosch?
Some water in the sump is normal. Bosch says it’s “normal to see a small amount of water” after a cycle, up to about two cups, because its condensation drying lets droplets run down the walls into the base. More than that, or water above the filter, means a drain problem.

When to call a technician
Call Bosch service if E24 returns after the filters, hose, pump cover and disposal are clear, if the impeller won’t turn, or if the pump hums without draining. Bosch says to avoid attempting internal repairs yourself. Print the checklist.
