Bosch Dishwasher E15 Error: What It Means & What to Do

What to do right now
- Turn off the water inflow. This is the step Bosch gives. The supply valve is usually under the kitchen sink, on the hot-water line going to the dishwasher.
- Switch the dishwasher off. If the floor is wet near an outlet or the cord, switch it off at the breaker instead of touching the plug.
- Mop up any water on the floor and put a towel along the front of the kick plate so you’ll notice if more appears.
- Don’t restart cycles to “test” it. Each new cycle can put more water into the base.

⚠️ Water near electrics
If water has reached the floor around the dishwasher, don’t reach under the kick plate or touch the plug with wet hands. Switch the dishwasher off at its breaker first. Don’t pull the dishwasher out of the cabinet: it’s connected to the water supply, the drain and the power, and moving it can break those connections.
How E15 works
Under the tub sits a shallow base pan. Normally it’s dry. When water gets into it, the leak protection reacts: Bosch says the safety switch “has detected water in the base of the dishwasher. Your leakage protection system has been activated.” iFixit’s repair guide describes the mechanism: “As water collects in the base, a foam float rises and activates the switch.” That’s why the code can stay on until the base dries, and why clearing it doesn’t fix anything. As iFixit puts it, “Resetting the safety switch does not repair the leak that triggered it.”
- Water supply valve under the sink: turn it off as soon as E15 appears.
- Door seal: a torn seal, or something stopping the door closing flat, lets water run down into the base.
- Inlet valve and hose: a drip at the water connection ends up in the base pan.
- Sump and pump area: leaks or foam escaping from the bottom of the tub.
- Base pan and float switch: water lifts the float and trips E15.

What usually puts water in the base
These checks are safe to do without moving the dishwasher. They help the technician and sometimes reveal the cause:

Why this guide doesn’t tell you to tilt the dishwasher
Many sites tell owners to pull the dishwasher out and tip it forward to drain the base. We don’t. Bosch’s own E15 guidance goes straight from turning off the water to contacting support. Tipping the machine means disconnecting or straining its supply, drain and electrical connections. Even when the code clears, the leak that filled the base is still there, and the next cycle can soak the cabinet floor and subfloor.
Keep the water supply off and don’t run the dishwasher until someone finds where the water came from.
