GE Dishwasher Not Draining? GE’s Fixes, Reset and Drain Codes
First: how much water is normal?
A little water left in a GE dishwasher isn’t a fault. GE says “Water settled in the bottom of the dishwasher at the end of the wash cycle is normal,” but it “should not be as high as the front of the center raised island in the bottom of the tub.” By filter type:
- Models without an Ultra Fine filter: “1 to 2 cups of clean water” covering the bottom of the tub is normal.
- Models with an Ultra Fine filter: “water in the sump (filter area) is normal,” but water shouldn’t cover the bottom of the tub.
More than that, dirty water, or water that won’t go down, means a drain problem.

⚠️ Caution: disconnect power and water first
Switch off the dishwasher’s circuit breaker (many are hardwired rather than plugged in) before you reach into the sump, remove the toe-kick panel or disconnect the drain hose. Never put your hand into the garbage disposer. Never pour drain cleaner into the dishwasher, and never bypass the float switch. If you aren’t comfortable doing this, call a qualified appliance technician.
1. Clean the Fine and Ultra Fine filters
GE’s first step: “remove and check the Fine and Ultra Fine filters.” On models that have them:
- Remove the bottom rack.
- “Twist the Ultra Fine Filter counterclockwise and lift it to remove.”
- To take out the Fine Filter, “twist each of the two retaining posts located toward the back, bottom of the dishwasher tub counterclockwise” and lift the filter out.
- Rinse both under running water. GE warns: “Scrubbing with scouring pads or brushes can damage the filter.”
- Refit them and lock the posts.
GE says filter cleaning “should be done every other month or more depending on usage.” Older and some portable GE models use a different filter arrangement; your owner’s manual shows yours.
2. Clear the sump area
GE: “Make sure there is not any paper or large object covering or blocking the sump area in the rear of the tub.” Labels from jars, broken glass, bones and fruit pits are the usual culprits. With the power off, scoop out standing water with a cup and sponge so you can see the sump.
3. Check the garbage disposer
Most GE dishwashers drain into the garbage disposer. GE: “If a disposer was recently installed or replaced, make sure the drain plug inside the disposer was removed.” A new disposer comes with a plug in the dishwasher inlet, and the dishwasher can’t drain until it’s knocked out. Run the disposer before starting the dishwasher so it’s empty, and never put your hand into it.
4. Check the drain hose, high loop and air gap
- Hose: GE: “Check the drain hose where it connects below the sink for a blockage or a kink in the hose.” A dishwasher pushed back after cleaning often kinks it.
- High loop: “The high drain loop must be attached to the underside of the counter and attached to the sink at a specific height.” Without it, dirty sink water can run back into the dishwasher.
- Air gap: if your sink has an air gap (a small chrome cap beside the faucet), remove the cover, unscrew the plastic cap and clean out the debris. GE: “Clearing the air gap will allow water to flow better as the dishwasher drains.”
- Sink drain: if the kitchen sink itself drains slowly, the dishwasher will too. Clear the sink drain first.
5. Rule out detergent
GE: “Using the wrong type or too much detergent can cause over-sudsing that can prevent the dishwasher from draining properly.” Use only automatic dishwasher detergent, never dish soap or laundry detergent. If suds fill the tub, scoop them out and run a rinse cycle without detergent.
GE also says: “Do not use drain cleaner in the dishwasher.”
6. Reset it and run a drain
GE’s reset: “Try pressing the “Start/Reset” pad to reset the dishwasher and wait 2 minutes.” The Start/Reset light “will blink for 75 to 90 seconds, depending on the model” while it pumps out. If that doesn’t clear it, turn off power “at the house circuit breaker or fuse box for 30 seconds,” then turn it back on and try again.
7. GE drain codes
Models with a display show a code when draining fails. GE’s meanings:

8. Still not draining: drain pump, motor or service
If the filters, sump, hose, air gap, disposer and sink are all clear and the dishwasher still holds water, the drain pump, its motor or the control has likely failed. These sit under the tub behind the toe-kick panel next to wiring, so book a technician. GE also notes that “Portable dishwashers that are not draining and are connected to the kitchen sink using the unicouple will need service.”

Angi’s rule of thumb: repair is often the better choice if the dishwasher is under eight years old and the repair costs less than half the price of a new one.
When to call a technician
Call for service if the dishwasher still holds water after you’ve cleaned the filters and checked the hose, air gap and disposer, if a drain code keeps coming back, if you hear the pump hum without moving water, or if it’s a portable model on a unicouple. How do I force my GE dishwasher to drain?

Why is my GE dishwasher holding water in the bottom?
