Whirlpool Freezer Not Freezing? 7 Checks Before You Call

Protect your food first: FoodSafety.gov says a closed freezer keeps food safe for “up to 48 hours in a full freezer and 24 hours in a half-full freezer.” Keep the door shut while you work out the cause.
Which Whirlpool freezer do you have?
- Freezer section of a refrigerator (top-freezer, bottom-freezer, French door or side-by-side): frost-free, with a fan that moves cold air. Most of the steps below apply.
- Upright freezer: may be frost-free or manual defrost; your owner’s manual says which.
- Chest freezer: usually manual defrost. Frost on the walls is normal and is removed by defrosting as the manual describes; a chest freezer that isn’t freezing points to the setting, the lid seal, the location or the sealed system.
Whirlpool Gold and other Whirlpool lines follow the same checks; only the controls differ.
Whirlpool freezer not freezing: match what you see
| What you notice | Most likely cause | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Freezer cold but food soft, ice cream runny | Setting too warm, overpacked, blocked vent | Setting, vents |
| Frost or ice around the door edge | Door not sealing | Paper test |
| Thick frost on the back wall of a frost-free freezer | Defrost system fault | Technician |
| Both freezer and fridge warm | Dirty coils, room too cold or hot, condenser fan or compressor | Coils and location |
| Lights and display work, no cooling at all (new or moved fridge) | Demo mode | Demo mode |
| Control turned to coldest, no click, nothing changes | Failed thermostat or control | Technician |
| Freezer in a garage that drops below 55°F | Location too cold for the refrigerator to run properly | Location |
1. Check the setting and measure the real temperature
Whirlpool’s target is 0°F or below. Put a freezer thermometer between packages; ice cream that has gone soft is another quick sign the freezer is too warm. If the control has been turned up, set it back to the recommended setting and wait. Whirlpool’s help pages say to “wait at least 24 hours between adjustments.”
Whirlpool also suggests turning a dial control from its lowest to its highest setting and listening: if the thermostat doesn’t click, Whirlpool says a professional should replace it.
2. Unblock the vents and don’t overpack
Whirlpool: “Check the venting in the back of the freezer to make sure no items are resting against it.” Overpacking a frost-free freezer can also cover the evaporator fan, so cold air can’t circulate. Leave a gap in front of the vents and avoid stacking food to the ceiling. Large amounts of warm food added at once will also raise the temperature for a day.
3. Test the door or lid seal
Whirlpool’s test: “closing a piece of paper in the freezer door, then tug at the paper.” If it slides out easily anywhere around the frame, clean the gasket with warm soapy water and make sure a drawer, shelf or ice bucket isn’t holding the door open. Frost building up just inside the door is a sign of a leaking seal.
4. Coils, clearance and where the freezer sits
- Coils: Whirlpool says “there is typically no need for routine condenser cleaning in a normal home operating environment,” but recommends cleaning “every 2 to 3 months” in dusty homes or homes with pets. Unplug first; some models can only be cleaned by a technician.
- Location: Whirlpool’s side-by-side guidance says “Do not install in a location where the temperature will fall below 55°F (13°C).” In a cold garage the refrigerator section may barely run, and the freezer section warms up as a result. Very hot rooms cause the opposite problem: the unit can’t shed heat fast enough.
⚠️ Caution: unplug before you open anything
Unplug the freezer or refrigerator before you clean the coils or remove any panel, and keep food in a cooler meanwhile. Don’t chip ice off the walls with a knife or screwdriver, and don’t use a heat gun or hair dryer. Anything involving refrigerant, the compressor or a sealed-system leak needs an EPA-certified technician.
5. Check for demo (showroom) mode
On Whirlpool refrigerators, demo mode keeps the lights and display on but turns the cooling off. Whirlpool describes it this way: “The refrigerator and freezer will not cool, even after changing the temperature settings.” Exiting demo mode uses a model-specific button combination; your owner’s manual or Whirlpool’s demo-mode page for your refrigerator style lists it.
6. Reset the freezer
Whirlpool’s reset is simple: “unplug the freezer or refrigerator-freezer combo from the wall,” wait a few minutes, plug it back in and set the controls. Then be patient: “it can take up to 24 hours for the freezer’s temperature to stabilize.”
7. Frost on the back wall, or a freezer that won’t defrost
Whirlpool notes that “Thick frost build-up on freezer walls can block vents and coils.” In a frost-free freezer, that frost should never build up: the defrost heater melts it a few times a day. If ice keeps building quickly on an automatic-defrost freezer, Whirlpool says it should be evaluated by a professional, because the defrost heater, its thermostat, the control or the evaporator fan has likely failed. Leaving the door ajar or a bad seal can cause frost too, so rule out the seal first.
If the fridge section of a combination unit is also warm, see frost and fans on our refrigerator guide; the cause is the same.
Food safety
- The FDA says a freezer should be at 0°F.
- Food that “still contains ice crystals or is 40°F or below” is safe to refreeze or cook (FDA).
- A closed freezer holds safe temperatures for about 48 hours full or 24 hours half full (FoodSafety.gov).
What freezer repairs usually cost

| Defrost heater or thermostat | $100 to $250 (Angi); $100 to $440 (HomeAdvisor) | Angi; HomeAdvisor |
| Evaporator fan motor | $100 to $250 | Angi (Oct 2026) |
| Compressor | $300 to $800 (Angi); $500 to $1,000 (Fixr, Aug 2025) | Angi; Fixr |
When to call a technician
Call for service if the freezer still isn’t at 0°F 24 hours after the checks above, if frost keeps building on the back wall, if the thermostat doesn’t click, if you can’t hear the fan, or if the compressor clicks without starting or never stops. Have the model and serial number, your thermometer readings and what you’ve tried. Print the checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Whirlpool freezer cold but not freezing?
Usually the setting is too warm, food is blocking the vent at the back, the door seal leaks, or frost is choking the airflow. Fix those, then allow 24 hours. If it still won’t reach 0°F, a fan, defrost part or the compressor needs checking.
How do I reset my Whirlpool freezer?
Unplug it from the wall, wait a few minutes, plug it back in and set the recommended temperature. Whirlpool says it can take up to 24 hours to stabilize.
Why is my Whirlpool freezer not defrosting?
On a frost-free model, a failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat or control lets frost build up. Whirlpool says fast ice build-up should be evaluated by a professional. Manual-defrost chest and upright freezers need defrosting by hand as the manual describes.
Why is my Whirlpool upright freezer not freezing?
The same checks apply: setting, vents, door seal, coils and location. Check whether your model is frost-free or manual defrost before deciding whether frost is normal.
What temperature should a Whirlpool freezer be?
0°F (-18°C) or below.
