Narrow it down by when the water appears

1. Check the fill hoses and their washers

Whirlpool: “Ensure that both ends of the inlet hoses have hose washers. Make sure that all the connections are tight.”

1. Turn off both water taps behind the washer.
2. Dry the hose connections at the taps and at the back of the washer with a towel, so a new drip will show.
3. Unscrew each hose end and look inside. There should be a flat rubber washer seated in every end. Replace missing, cracked or flattened washers; they’re inexpensive.
4. Screw the connections back on, hand-tight plus a little more. Don’t overtighten plastic fittings.
5. Check the hoses themselves for cracks, bulges or kinks. Whirlpool’s front-load article also says to check external hoses for damage.
6. Turn the taps back on and watch the connections for a minute.

2. Check the drain hose and the house drain

Whirlpool says the drain hose must be secure, and “the sink and drainpipe must be able to carry away no less than 17 gallons (64 L) of water per minute.”

• Check that the drain hose is secured in the standpipe or laundry sink and hasn’t worked loose during spins.
• Watch the standpipe or sink during a drain. If water rises and overflows there, the house drain is slow or blocked. That’s a plumbing problem, and the puddle ends up under the washer.
• Don’t seal the drain hose tightly into the standpipe. Follow the routing in your installation instructions.

3. Use HE detergent, in the right amount

Whirlpool: “Always use only HE detergent. Using non-HE detergent or more than the manufacturer’s recommended amount of detergent can cause excessive suds, which can lead to the washer leaking…” Whirlpool also warns against “no splash” or “easy-pour” chlorine bleach, which contains a thickening agent that can create excess suds.

If you see heavy foam, measure detergent to the line on the cap for the load size, not a full cap. Concentrated pods count as a full dose.

4. Front loaders leaking from the bottom front

Water at the front of a front loader usually comes from the door or the dispenser. Whirlpool’s front-leak checks:

• Door glass and seal: clean grime and deposits off the inner rubber seal, and remove pet hair or lint from the door.
• Items in the seal: remove any clothing caught in or under the seal and keep its drainage holes clear. Check the seal for tears.
• Dispenser drawer: clear detergent build-up that blocks the water flow, and make sure the drawer is completely closed. On models with a bulk dispenser at the base, check that it is fully closed too.
• Single-dose packets go in the drum before the clothes, never in the dispenser.
• Load and level: don’t pack the drum tightly or let clothing sit against the door seal, and make sure the washer is level.
• Don’t open the drain-pump filter to “check” for a leak unless your manual covers it: it releases the water left in the drum onto the floor.

5. Top loaders (including Cabrio): don’t add clothes at the highest water level

Whirlpool notes that adding clothes after the cycle has started, when using the highest water level, can make water overflow the inner tub. Its rule: “Never add more than 1 or 2 small items to a wash that has already started when using the highest water level setting.” Whirlpool also says to check the household plumbing nearby (laundry tub, faucets, drainpipe, water heater and pipes), because a leak there can end up under the washer. 6. Still not sure? Find the source with a watched rinse

1. Dry the floor completely and lay dry paper towels around the base and under the hoses.
2. Run a short Rinse & Spin with no load and no detergent while you stay in the room.
3. Note where the first drops appear and at which stage: filling, agitating/tumbling, draining or spinning.
4. Stop the cycle at the first sign of real leaking and turn the taps off.

If water appears from inside the cabinet at a point you can’t reach without removing panels, that’s a service job.

When to call service

Book Whirlpool service (US) or a technician if the leak comes from inside the cabinet, from the pump area, or from the tub itself, or if it continues after the checks above. Give them the model and serial number, front-load or top-load, when in the cycle it leaks and where the first water appeared, the detergent you use, and any error code. Print the checklist. A puddle on its own doesn’t prove the pump or tub has failed; ask the technician how they identified the part before approving a replacement.
