LG Washer OE Code: What It Means and How to Fix It

OE is one of the most searched LG codes, and it’s usually a ten-minute fix. The order below follows LG’s own steps, with the front-load and top-load differences called out, because the two machines drain differently.
LG washer OE code: match what you see
| What you notice | Most likely cause | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| OE right after the washer was moved or pushed back | Drain hose pinched between washer and wall | Drain hose |
| Front loader, pump hums but water stays | Clogged drain pump filter (coins, hair ties, lint) | Clean the filter |
| No hum at all on Spin Only | Drain pump not running | Request repair |
| OE in winter, washer in a garage or cold room | Frozen drain hose or pump | Thaw it |
| OE and lots of suds in the drum | Too much detergent | Tub Clean, less detergent |
| Water backs up out of the standpipe | Clogged household drain | Clear the house drain or call a plumber |
1. Check the drain hose
LG’s first step: “Pull the washer away from the wall far enough to check that the drain hose is not bent, clogged, or has become pinched between the back of the washer and the wall.” Straighten any kink, then run a spin cycle. LG: “After removing clogs and straightening kinked hoses, perform a spin cycle to confirm that the OE/E03/E21 has been resolved.”
2. Run Spin Only and listen for the pump
Select Spin Only with the spin speed on High and start it. LG says a humming sound “indicates that the drain pump motor has started working.” If you hear the hum but water doesn’t go down, the blockage is in the filter or hose (step 3). If there’s no hum at all, the pump isn’t running, and LG’s guidance is to request a repair.
⚠️ Caution: hot water and a full drum
LG warns: “The water inside might still be hot. Let it cool down before you drain it.” Turn the washer off and unplug it before opening the filter panel. Have towels and a shallow pan ready; the amount of water depends on when the cycle stopped. Don’t open the door of a front loader that is full of water.
3. Clean the drain pump filter (front loaders)
LG’s front-load steps, in short:
- Turn the washer off and unplug it.
- Open the small service panel at the bottom front (bottom left on most models).
- Pull out the small drain tube, remove its cap and let the leftover water run into a shallow pan. LG: “Do not pull the hose too far out. It will kink the hose and prevent the water from draining out.” If nothing comes out, push it back in about an inch.
- When it stops, unscrew the filter, clear out lint and objects, and rinse it. LG says not to wash it in the dishwasher.
- Refit the filter firmly, recap the tube and close the panel.
If the filter was already clear, LG points to excess suds: “Perform a TUB CLEAN CYCLE and REDUCE the amount of detergent used.” LG recommends cleaning this filter at least once a month.
If you have a top loader
On top loaders, LG says OE “will display if the washer is unable to drain water for 13 minutes.” LG’s top-load steps are the hose check, then Spin Only, then a Tub Clean cycle. If your model has no Spin Only, LG’s alternative is to “Force drain the unit by starting a cycle and pausing it.” “After 8 minutes the unit will automatically time out, display DR, and try to drain the unit.” Then run an empty wash cycle; “If the error occurs again, the unit will require a repair service.”
4. Check the hose height and fit
LG’s front-load installation guides say: “Do not install the end of the drain hose lower than 29 in. (73.7 cm) or higher than 96 in. (243.8 cm)” above the bottom of the washer. LG also warns: “Never create an airtight seal between the hose and the drain with tape or other means.” On an LG pedestal washer, the drain must be “no more than 53 inches above the floor.” Pour a bucket of water down the standpipe: if it backs up, the clog is in your house drain, not the washer.
5. Thaw a frozen hose
LG lists a frozen drain hose as a cause. If the washer is in a cold garage or the code appeared after a freezing night, LG’s fix is to pour warm (not boiling) water into the tub and wait for the drain pump to thaw, then run Spin Only.
What an OE repair usually costs
| Repair | Typical cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Drain pump replacement | $150 to $350 total (part $20 to $100) | HomeGuide |
| Pump replacement | $300 to $400 | Fixr (Jan 2025) |
| Diagnostic visit | $50 to $100, often waived if you go ahead | Fixr (Jan 2025) |
When to call a technician
LG: “If the OE error code appears again, the unit may require a repair service.” Call if the pump makes no sound on Spin Only, if it hums but won’t drain with a clean filter and a clear hose, or if you find a broken impeller behind the filter. Tell the technician whether the pump hums and what you found in the filter. Print the checklist.
Frequently asked questions
What does OE mean on an LG washer?
A drain error: the washer can’t drain the water from the wash cycle. E03 and E21 are the same fault on newer front loaders.
How do I force my LG washer to drain?
Run Spin Only. On a front loader, you can also drain it through the small tube behind the filter panel. On top loaders without Spin Only, start a cycle and pause it; after 8 minutes it shows DR and tries to drain.
How do I reset the OE code on my LG washer?
LG doesn’t list a separate reset for OE. Once the hose or filter is cleared, a spin cycle clears the code. If the display won’t clear, unplug the washer for a minute, plug it back in and run Spin Only again.
How do I know if my LG drain pump is bad?
If there’s no hum on a High Spin Only cycle with the filter and hose clear, the pump isn’t running. That’s a repair, per LG.
Why does my LG washer keep saying OE after I cleaned the filter?
Check the hose height and fit, the house drain, and detergent suds. If all are fine, the pump or its wiring is the likely cause.
