LG Dishwasher OE Code: What It Means and How to Fix It

Food debris at a dishwasher drain hose opening over a catch tray
Quick answer: The LG dishwasher OE code is a drain error. LG says “An OE error indicates water is not draining from the appliance,” “most often resulting from food clogs or an installation issue.” Clean the filter in the bottom of the tub first. Then check the drain hose under the sink for kinks, clean the air gap if you have one, and run the garbage disposal. If OE showed up on the very first cycle, or right after a new disposal was fitted, it’s an installation problem: a kinked or badly routed hose, or the disposal’s knockout plug still in place. If it keeps coming back after all that, LG says the dishwasher needs a repair.

Standing water in an LG dishwasher is rarely the pump. In most cases it’s the filter or something under the sink. The steps below follow LG’s order.

⚠️ Caution: power off, hot water and sharp edges

LG says to make sure the dishwasher is turned off before cleaning the air gap or internal parts, “to prevent electric shock or malfunction.” Wait about 30 minutes after a cycle before removing the filter so the water cools. Wear gloves: LG warns the stainless steel filter has sharp edges. Switch off the disposal at the wall before reaching near it.

1. Clean the filter

Take out the lower rack and scoop out any standing water with a cup. Then:

  1. “Turn the mesh filter counterclockwise to remove it.” Lift it out.
  2. Separate the inner filter from the outer stainless filter and rinse both “under running water with a soft brush.”
  3. Check the sump opening underneath for glass, bones, seeds or labels.
  4. Refit the filters and turn the handle clockwise until it clicks.

LG recommends cleaning the filter often: “For best wash performance, clean the filter after each load.” After cleaning, run an empty Normal or Heavy cycle with no detergent to test the drain.

2. Check the drain hose under the sink

LG notes that “heavy objects press against the drain hose under the sink” and crush or bend it. Empty the cabinet, follow the corrugated hose from the dishwasher to the sink drain or disposal, and straighten any kinks or flat spots.

3. Clean the air gap and run the disposal

If your sink has an air gap (a small chrome cap beside the faucet), it’s a common clog point. LG: “Turn off the dishwasher, remove the air gap cover on the sink,” take off the inner cap and clear the debris. A bottle brush or a straw works. Then run the garbage disposal with cold water for a few seconds: if the disposal is full, the dishwasher can’t drain into it.

4. New dishwasher or new disposal?

LG: “If the OE error code displayed on the first cycle, this indicates an installation issue with the drain hose.” The hose “may be either kinked, too high, or too long.” LG’s limits:

  • The end of the drain hose must be between 12 and 40 inches above the base of the dishwasher.
  • “The drain hose should not exceed 12 feet in length. Do not add any type of extension.”

If a new garbage disposal was installed, the plastic knockout plug in its dishwasher inlet may still be in place, and the dishwasher can’t drain into it. LG says: “The plug must be removed by either an installer or plumber.”

5. Force a drain

LG: “To perform a drain only, check the control panel for the CANCEL & DRAIN option.” If your model doesn’t have it, start any cycle: “The first 45 seconds of any cycle is drain only.” Once it drains, clean the filter and spray arms and run an empty cycle with a cup of vinegar or a dishwasher cleaner, as LG suggests.

When to call a technician

LG: “If you tried all the options above and the OE error code displays again, the unit will require a repair service.” Call if the filter, hose, air gap and disposal are all clear and water still sits in the tub, or if you hear the pump hum without draining. Print the checklist.

Frequently asked questions

What does OE mean on an LG dishwasher?

A drain error: water isn’t draining from the tub, most often because of a food clog or an installation problem.

How do I force my LG dishwasher to drain?

Use CANCEL & DRAIN if your control panel has it. Otherwise start any cycle; LG says the first 45 seconds are drain only.

Fix the clog, then turn the dishwasher off, switch off its breaker for 10 seconds, switch it back on and start a new cycle.

Why does my new LG dishwasher show OE?
