LG Dishwasher bE Code: What It Means and How to Fix It

Soap foam overflowing the edge of an open dishwasher
Quick answer: The LG dishwasher bE code is a “bubble error”: the dishwasher has detected too many suds and stops to prevent a leak. LG says it “indicates the use of improper detergent or failure to level the appliance.” The usual cause is hand dish soap or too much detergent. To clear the suds, LG’s fix is to set the rinse aid to L0, leave the detergent cup empty, put a bowl of milk (200 to 300 mL, about 7 oz) on the upper rack and run a Normal cycle. Then use proper dishwasher detergent, check the dishwasher is level, reset the power and run it again.

If someone put a squirt of hand dish soap in the dispenser, that’s almost certainly your answer, and the milk trick below clears it. If bE keeps coming back with the right detergent and no visible suds, there’s a short list of other checks and then it’s a service call.

1. Check the detergent

LG: “Do not use hand-washing liquid detergents. This type of detergent is not intended for automatic dishwashers.” Use automatic dishwasher detergent only: LG recommends “a powder detergent or solid-type dedicated detergent for dishwashers.” LG also notes that some eco-friendly detergents, or simply using a lot, can cause excess bubbles, so use less or switch brands if bE happens now and then.

LG’s own test: empty the dishwasher and run it with no detergent. If foam builds up and bE shows, leftover detergent is the cause.

2. Clear the suds with milk

Milk breaks down foam. LG’s steps:

  1. Remove the dishes and make sure the detergent dispenser is empty.
  2. “Set the rinse aid level to L0.”
  3. “Place a bowl containing 200 to 300 mL of milk in the center of the upper rack.”
  4. Run the Normal cycle (LG’s support adds the High Temp and Extra Rinse options where your model has them).
  5. If suds remain, repeat. Results vary by detergent brand.
  6. When you’re done, set the rinse aid back to its usual level.

If there’s a lot of foam, scoop out what you can with a cup and wipe up with towels first. Spilled rinse aid on the door or in the tub can foam too, so wipe up any you see.

3. Check the dishwasher is level

LG lists “failure to level the appliance” as the second cause of bE. The dishwasher should be level front to back and side to side; set a small level on the door opening and the lower rack track. Adjusting the legs means removing the toe kick panel under the door; your installation manual shows how.

4. Reset and run a normal cycle

LG’s last step: “If you always use the right detergent, the dishwasher is level, and there are no suds in the tub,” “then RESET the power and run a cycle again with proper detergent.” LG’s power reset for its dishwashers: “Press the POWER button to turn the dishwasher off.” “Turn the circuit breaker to the dishwasher OFF and wait 10 seconds.” Turn the breaker back on, then “Press the POWER button to turn the dishwasher ON, and start a new cycle.”

⚠️ Caution: water on the floor

bE exists to stop foam pushing water out of the door. If water reached the floor, dry it fully and check it hasn’t run under the cabinets. Switch off the dishwasher’s breaker before removing the toe kick panel or touching anything under the tub. Don’t keep restarting cycles while foam is still visible.

bE with no bubbles

A common related search is “bE code but no bubbles.” If you’ve used the right detergent, run the milk cycle, leveled the dishwasher and reset the power, and bE still appears with no foam in the tub, the dishwasher is reading suds that aren’t there. That points to a sensing, drain or control problem that needs a technician. LG offers repair booking through its support site; have the model number ready.

When to call a technician

Call if bE returns every cycle with the correct detergent, a level dishwasher and no visible suds, or if water has leaked under the cabinets. Tell the technician what you’ve tried (milk cycle, rinse aid at L0, leveling, power reset). Print the checklist.

Frequently asked questions

What does bE mean on an LG dishwasher?

Bubble error. LG says the dishwasher shows bE “when oversudsing occurs, thereby preventing leaks,” usually from hand dish soap or too much detergent.

How do I fix bE on my LG dishwasher?

Set the rinse aid to L0, put 200 to 300 mL of milk in a bowl on the upper rack, run a Normal cycle with no detergent, then reset the power and use proper dishwasher detergent.

How do I reset the error code on my LG dishwasher?

Turn it off, switch off its breaker for 10 seconds, switch it back on, power the dishwasher on and start a new cycle.

Can rinse aid cause bE?

Rinse aid spilled in the tub or on the door can add foam. LG’s fix sets the rinse aid to L0 during the suds-clearing cycle; set it back afterwards and wipe up any spills.

Can I use regular dish soap in an LG dishwasher?

No. LG says hand-washing liquid detergents are not intended for automatic dishwashers and cause excess suds.
