GE Dishwasher Not Draining? Check the Water Pattern

Is the remaining water abnormal?

GE distinguishes models with an Ultra Fine filter from models without one: water confined to the sump can be normal on the former, while some models without that filter retain a small amount across the tub floor. Compare the level with your model guidance before calling it a drainage failure. See GE’s official drainage guidance.

Record whether the cycle ended normally, was interrupted, or displayed an error. If the manual provides an owner Cancel/Drain procedure and no leak or electrical hazard is present, follow that exact procedure. Do not improvise a service-mode sequence.

Did it start after installation or disposal work?

Tell the installer about a new dishwasher, replaced garbage disposal or changed drain hose. An unremoved disposer inlet plug, a restricted hose or incorrect routing can prevent proper drainage. Compare the accessible arrangement with the installation diagram rather than pulling the dishwasher out or disconnecting plumbing as a first test.

Check only the parts your manual makes accessible

Let hot water cool and isolate power as directed before owner maintenance. Sharp glass can be hidden in debris. Use the model’s filter-cleaning instructions; do not assume every GE has a twist-out cylindrical filter. Do not pour chemical drain cleaner into the dishwasher.

Note whether the sink or air gap also backs up and whether excess suds are present. These observations help distinguish household drainage, detergent and appliance problems. Internal pump testing, wiring and component replacement need qualified diagnosis.

Give service a useful description

• Full model and any displayed code.
• Water location, approximate level and whether it returns later.
• Completed or interrupted cycle.
• Sink drainage and visible air-gap overflow.
• Recent installation or disposal replacement.

Print the checklist. Ask whether the diagnosis verified the drain route before approving a new pump. An audible hum does not by itself identify a failed part.
