1. Loose or damaged inlet supply hoses (easiest fix)

The hot and cold water supply hoses connect your washer to the wall valves, and their rubber washers or fittings can loosen or crack over time, letting water drip behind or beneath the machine.

  1. Unplug the washer and turn off both water supply valves at the wall.
  2. Pull the machine away from the wall and inspect both inlet hoses along their entire length.
  3. Hand-tighten each hose coupling at the machine and at the wall; use pliers for a final quarter-turn if still loose.
  4. Check the rubber washer inside each coupling—if it is cracked or flat, replace it.
  5. Turn the water back on slowly and watch for drips before pushing the machine back.

2. Worn or torn door seal / boot gasket (front-loaders)

On front-loading washers, the rubber door boot gasket creates a watertight seal between the door glass and the drum; tears, mold buildup, or embedded debris can cause water to pool on the floor during the wash cycle.

  1. Open the door and run your fingers around the entire gasket, feeling for cracks, tears, or foreign objects lodged in the fold.
  2. Clean the gasket thoroughly with a damp cloth; sometimes debris is holding the seal open.
  3. Run a short wash cycle and watch the bottom of the door glass for dripping water.

3. Clogged or faulty drain pump filter

Most modern washers have a drain pump filter (also called a coin trap) that catches lint, coins, and debris; a blockage forces water back and out through the filter access door at the front base of the machine.

  1. Locate the small access panel at the lower front of the washer and open it.
  2. Place towels and a shallow pan beneath the drain hose stub or filter cap before opening, as residual water will pour out.
  3. Slowly unscrew the filter cap counterclockwise and allow water to drain into the pan.
  4. Remove any lint, coins, or debris from the filter and the filter housing cavity.
  5. Inspect the filter cap O-ring for damage; replace it if it is deformed or missing.

4. Leaking or cracked drain hose

The corrugated drain hose carries dirty water from the pump to your standpipe or sink; a split, loose clamp, or improper installation height can cause water to leak onto the floor during the spin cycle.

  1. Pull the washer out and trace the drain hose from the back of the machine to where it exits into the standpipe or laundry tub.
  2. Feel along the hose for wet spots, cracks, or loose hose clamps.
  3. Tighten any loose clamps with a screwdriver; replace the hose if cracked.
  4. Confirm the drain hose is inserted no more than 6 inches into the standpipe and is secured with a cable tie or hose guide—an insertion that is too deep can cause siphoning and apparent leaking.

5. Washing machine leaking from detergent drawer or dispenser

Using too much detergent, the wrong detergent type (e.g., non-HE soap in an HE machine), or a blocked dispenser can cause water and suds to overflow the drawer tray and run down the front of the machine.

  1. Remove the detergent drawer completely—most drawers release by pressing a small tab while pulling.
  2. Rinse the drawer and all compartments under warm running water; use an old toothbrush to clear any hardened soap residue.
  3. Inspect the dispenser housing inside the machine for debris or soap buildup; wipe it clean.
  4. Check that you are using HE (High Efficiency) detergent if required by your machine, and measure the correct dose per the detergent label.

6. Failed tub seal or drum bearing (advanced)

If water appears directly beneath the center of the machine during agitation, the main tub seal—which prevents water from leaking past the drum shaft—may be failing, and it is often accompanied by a grinding or rumbling noise from a worn drum bearing.

  1. Listen for an unusual rumbling or grinding noise during the spin cycle, which typically accompanies this failure.
  2. Grab the drum and try to move it up and down—excessive play indicates a worn bearing.
